It is the second largest of the three great seats of learning (gdan sa) in the Geluk (dge lugs) school. Located about 2 miles north of Lhasa, and occupying an area of about 1/3 km2 , Sera is comprised of a great sutra chanting hall, a college and 32 sections. Sera Monastery together with Ganden Monastery and Drepung Monastery in Lhasa are known as the Three Great Monasteries of Tibet.
