CASERTA PALACE - ITALY
The monumental complex at Caserta, created by the Bourbon king Charles III in the mid-18th century to rival
Versailles and the Royal Palace in Madrid, is exceptional for the way in which it brings together a magnificent
palace with its park and gardens, as well as natural woodland, hunting lodges and a silk factory.
The palace was the last great building of the Italian baroque. There are 1200 rooms,
the majestic main staircase, whose 116 steps
were all carved from one gigantic block of stone .
The gardens are immense. There are the Bosco Vecchio (old wood), the little castle built as a
playhouse for the Bourbon princes, the fish pond , the dolphin fountain ...
