NEW RIVER GORGE BRIDGE - UNITED STATES


New River Gorge Bridge will have to relinquish its claim as the longest steel-arch bridge in the world. The West Virginia Department of Highways, which owns the bridge, chose the Michael Baker Company to do the design. The costruction begun on June 1974 , anh completed on October 1977 Its height is 876 ft , bridge lenght is 3,030ft , arch lenght is 1,700 ft . Arching gracefully across the New River, the bridge has the world's 2nd longest single arch steel span. At 876 feet above the New River, it is the second highest bridge in this country. Only the Royal Gorge Bridge over the Arkansas River in Colorado is higher.
