LUMBINI BIRTHPLACE OF BUDDHA - NEPAL

Lumbini, located in the flat plains of South-Western Nepal and the foothills of Churia range , evokes a kind of holy sentiment to the millions of Buddhists all over the world. Siddhartha Gautama, the Lord Buddha, was born in 623 B.C. in the famous gardens of Lumbini which soon became a place of pilgrimage. Among the pilgrims was the Indian emperor Ashoka, who erected one of his commemorative pillars there. The main shrines of Lumbini are the newly restored Mayadevi Temple, the Ashokan Pillar behind the temple and the Lake Shakya Puskarini where Mayadevi is said to have bathed before delivering the little Buddha into the world.
