VENICE GRAND CANAL - ITALY

Venice (Italian Venezia), city and seaport in north-east Italy, in Veneto Region, capital of Venice Province. Venice is situated on 120 islands formed by 177 canals in the lagoon between the mouths of the Po and Piave rivers, at the northern extremity of the Adriatic Sea. The Canal Grande ( or Grand Canal) is the only really large one. It is about 3km ( 2 mi ) long, snakes through Venice, its great double backwards S curve giving the city's sestieri their shape. The most interesting stretch is between Vallaresso vaporetto stop, near Piazza San Marco, in the south-east and the station (Ferrovia) in the north-west . The Grand Canal of Venice is the most wonderful thing in the world. No other city affords a spectacle so fine, so bizarre, and so fairy-like.
