ITSUKUSHIMA SHRINE - JAPAN

Located on Miyajima Island in the Seto inland Sea, Itsukushima shrine was built in the architectural style of the Heian period in 593. Later, in 1168, it was rebuild in its current beautiful form: "Shinden Zukuri" style with vermilion painted pillars carrying a majestic roof thatched with a cover of Japanese cypress. The “torii” (a shrine’s gate) and the shrine itself were built on the waters edge and at high tide appear to be floating on the sea. Many traditional rites are performed here.
